Basketball for the first time

One thing I wish I could experience again is playing basketball for the first time. To be honest, I have no clue when this specifically refers to, just that it was early in elementary school. I want to say that I was around 7 or 8 years old when I was introduced to the sport, but I can’t recall the exact time. I want to experience playing basketball for the first time again because I’ve been reminded of how much fun it is, with my senior season currently in full swing. After not playing on the Uni team last season due to COVID, I hadn’t played much in the offseason, besides getting together with some friends to play occasionally. The beginning of my senior season was kind of like a reintroduction to the sport, where I once again realized I loved playing and felt the adrenaline every time I stepped onto the court.

Looking back, basketball has helped me fit into the world around me, making new friends and practicing essential skills like coordination and communication. Experiencing it all for the first time again would undoubtedly entail a rush of excitement. I’ve played basketball for around 10 years at this point, and have enjoyed so many things about the sport. From playing it myself to watching professionals, or even talking with friends about it, it’s been a large part of my life for much of my life. The sport never gets old, there are always new things happening within the professional scene, like records being broken, or entertaining highlight reels, which always bring excitement to my friends and I. Since even after all these years I find the sport so fascinating, I can only imagine how excited I was the first time I touched a basketball.

Another related thing I’d want to experience again for the first time is scoring my first points in a game. This likely first occurred around when I began playing the sport when I played within the local Park District league. Although I don’t remember when or how I scored my first points, it was undoubtedly an exciting experience for me, and likely contributed to how I've continued to play the sport so many years later. To this day, every time I score a basket, there’s a rush of excitement that courses through me. Scoring means that I have personally contributed to the score up on the scoreboard, making a concrete impact on the game. I’m definitely not the most talented player on the floor, but I put in the effort to play my best, and work to still help my team win.

I’ve really enjoyed getting back onto the court after not playing last year, and am fulfilling a dream since Subbie year. Since our Subbie year, our senior class (‘22) has anticipated playing together as seniors, (hopefully) dominating the competition around us. That time is finally here, and I’m really enjoying playing alongside my friends and classmates in our final high school season.

  1. It sounds like basketball is an integral part of who you are as a person now with how much it has helped you develop. You would probably be a completely different person without it. If you can't remember your exactly your earliest points or your first time playing, what are your earliest memories with the sport? I am curious.

  4. It's evident basketball shaped who you are based on just reading your post. Sports in general can become such a key connection to other aspects of life and it's neat to see how basketball helped you branch out and how dedicated you are to the sport!

  5. I find it interesting how something such as a hobby can slip into our life so seamlessly to the point where we have a hard time pinpointing when we made it a part of ourselves. I wonder how different you would have been if this seamless transition in your life had never occurred. Great Post.

  6. I loved how you showed how well this hobby has really just turned into a life style and how different you may be today if it hadn't made its way into your life. The memories are really what makes something so ingrained in someone's life. I hope you keep going on your journey too, it seems like its really benefited you. I hope you do well this season!
